Jonathan obtained his MEng in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London in 2012, under the supervision of Professor Nigel Graham. Jonathan then furthered his studies at the University of Cambridge and obtained an MPhil degree (Distinction) in Engineering for Sustainable Development in 2013. His MPhil dissertation looked at saline wastewater treatment using halophilic bacteria. Having developed an interest in the field of water environment and water engineering, Jonathan decided to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Dr. Dongfang Liang in the Geotechnical and Environmental Research Group.
Jonathan's Ph.D. focuses on the modeling and analysis of the hydrodynamics and pollutant transports mechanism of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. This project built a numerical computational model using novel methods and practical field data, in order to give a better understanding on mainly three areas of Poyang Lake: (1) hydraulic flow of the basin that captures the lake’s high water fluctuation; (2) pollutant and water quality characteristics, and (3) impact of the potential barrage on the lake environment. The model provides the capability and novelty to offer new perspectives and technical support to existing measures in water quality and river management.
In January 2016, Jonathan's research was featured in a Croucher news article. Jonathan's research has also been published as conference proceedings from the River Flow 2016 - 8th International Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics, HIC 2016 - 12th International Conference on Hydroinformatics and CCSH 2016 - 2nd Conference of Global Chinese Scholars on Hydrodynamics, where he was awarded the Outstanding Student Paper Award. In 2017, Jonathan was awarded the British Council Newton Fund to continue his research in an exchange placement at Tsinghua University, China for 11 months.
Jonathan is currently working in the engineering consulting industry at Black and Veatch Hong Kong and focusing on water infrastructure and water management.
