Professor ZHANG Tong-Yi is awardee of the Second Prize of 2007 State Natural Science Award (China) and the Second Prize of 1987 State Natural Science Award (China), a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a fellow of ASM International (USA), a JSPS Visiting Professor at Kyoto University (Japan), and Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Professor Zhang is distinguished for his research on the mechanical properties of materials and his contributions to the “knowledge of hydrogen diffusion, fracture of piezoelectric ceramics, intercalated graphite, and thin film systems using both analytical and state-of-the-art experimental techniques”.
